VLC 3.0 adds 4K60-, VR- and HDR-Support

Jean-Baptiste just released Codename “WeatherWax“, the VLC 3.0 “beta” for the mass, the Client itself is already on the Release Candidate 4 status which means we will see a final version very soon.

VLC 3.0 will activate the hardware decoding function on Windows, macOS, Linux for H.264 and H.265 8/10-bit video formats. The media player will encode 4K60- and even 8K-videos without punish your CPU much.

A really new function is the HDR-Tone-Mapping function, among 360-Degree-Video and 3D-Audio. Jean-Baptiste also promised that the player gets another focus on VR-Content very soon. The new version also fully supports Chromecast and you can search files over SMB, FTP, SFTP & NFS.

Windows fully got an HiDPI integration to scale better on high-res monitores, macOS got a GUI re-design and Linux will soon get WayLand support.

It’s really an important release and the player is still together with MPC the number one player when it comes to playing video/audio. There both easy to use and loved by millions of people – free of course.

There is no final releas date given but I expect the it within the next two months.
