About the Registry

The first sign of ‘registry’ goes back to old Windows 3.1 times. Back in the days, the registry systems were not the same as what there were as of today, the database got slow and flooded with useless information which was loaded each time you started a search within the database.

This has changed dramatically which means Windows only loads the needed information, no matter if you Registry contains useful or useless information, it loads only the things it really ‘needs’.

What does Microsoft say about the Registry?

There is a statement from Microsoft which you can find here. The same question if such cleaners are good or safe was asked multiple times in the official Microsoft forums.

Microsoft does not support the use of registry cleaners. Some programs available for free on the internet might contain spyware, adware, or viruses. If you decide to install a registry cleaning utility, be sure to research the product and only download and install programs from publishers that you trust. For more information, see when to trust a software publisher.

Microsoft is not responsible for issues caused by using a registry cleaning utility. We strongly recommend that you only change values in the registry that you understand or have been instructed to change by a source you trust, and that you back up the registry before making any changes.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of a registry cleaning utility can be solved. Issues caused by these utilities may not be repairable and lost data may not be recoverable.

Before you modify the registry, make sure you back it up, create a restore point, and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Wait a sec, Microsoft had it’s own registry cleaner!

Microsoft once provided a free registry cleaner called “RegClean”. It hasn’t been supported since Windows 98. In fact, Microsoft removed it from their website because it caused so many problems and with more recent Windows versions it became obsolete.

Errors in the Registry

Registry cleaners will always find errors even on a freshly installed operating system. This is not really a secret, the trick is that some software manufacturers are classifying events recorded in the registry as critical errors which according to them require some kind of fixing, in other words, you see some entries which are totally okay and maybe only temporarily not used anymore.

Why Avast & Co. still won’t give up on registry cleaning?

It’s a marketing gack which still seems to work, some people believe that it speeds up your system while others think that a ‘defragmented’ registry helps – Well, the Windows 98 times are over boys.

You should just ignore the function totally and don’t clean or optimize your registry there is no benefit in doing this except that you might delete important keys which the OS needs in order to boot, if you clean some information the OS might break after the next restart because it can’t find the ‘critical’ entries which are necessary in order to start Windows properly.

Conclusion

Registry cleaners don’t improve your OS or application performance, in fact, it can cause a lot of troubles and you start to blame Microsoft or a KB but maybe it’s just caused because you used a cleaner? Who knows.

Such cleaners and optimations programs are a big waste of your spare lifetime and hopefully, this topic is closed once and for all.

        1. Okay, if it helped you but usually that’s more a Windows problem with corrupted files or too long file-names/paths. Maybe try next time to delete the file or folder via command prompt (with adminstrative privilegues) RD /S /Q that should always work even for files with long filenames.

          1. Just want to say that, you are right that registry cleaner should not be used.although it helped me but it can create more problems than it solves.
for example, revo uninstaller or other uninstallers registry cleanup function is also bad. i just uninstalled some programs with revo with advance function and it leads me to broken start menu with many entries removed.
i’m not touching any registry cleaner from now on.
