Let’s check the Donation Systems and their Alternatives

Patreon recently got under criticism (yet again) which brings me to the question which donation/fundraising services are left for small projects? 1_SRfo3-YfPlITxjxOHcmyIQ

U no BitCoin?

Which cryptocurrency though? Bitcoin is unusable for small payments, and others are still very volatile – and I don’t like Coins.

The alternatives to Patreon

  • Liberapay – What’s interesting compared to Patreon (and the latest policy change) is that they take absolutely no fees. The only fees are transaction fees, totally transparents. They are financed only with their liberapay account, where you can pledge money.
  • OpenCollective (Source Code) – OpenCollective is pretty expensive: 10% fees for them plus 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction for Stripe but it’s open source and there. They provide a lot more services (compared to other services) – in a way, they manage bookkeeping etc. for you. So if you want or need those services, they can be very interesting, but if you are just looking for a cheaper alternative to Patreon they are not.
  • DonorBox – Donorbox helps you receive donations for free on any of the website –  and is easy to use cause it integrates with WordPress, Joomla, Weebly, Wix and others CMS.

However I stay (for now) with Patreon cause I think it’s still not bad for small projects, it might be not the best decision but theoretically I can switch to a better services at any time. Every service has his pros and cons.
